Quick answer: one path, one PlayStyle, one more OVR

What does Future Stars Academy III need, and which path should I pick?

EA says you pick an eligible ST or CAM born on or after 9 October 2003, enrol them, and take them through four Academy Evolutions to create your own Future Star. Academy III is step three. It takes your 82-rated Academy player, once they've finished Academy II, to 83 OVR (FUTWIZ). It's free, there's just one level, and you need to win 2 matches. There's no shared upgrade. You pick one of three paths, and each adds +1 OVR, a PlayStyle and a set of pace, shooting or dribbling boosts (FUTWIZ). Community reporting names the PlayStyles as:

  • Pace path: Rapid
  • Shooting path: Power Shot
  • Dribbling path: Technical

The short version: Rapid for a striker who runs in behind, Power Shot for a pure finisher, and Technical for a CAM or forward who carries the ball. Academy IV is expected on Friday 16 October and takes the card to 85 OVR (community reporting).

How the four Academy stages stack

EA confirms there are four Academy Evolutions but hasn't published a calendar or ratings for each stage. Here's where things stand. Academy I to III are confirmed on FUTWIZ, and Academy IV comes from community reporting:

StageReleaseEntryResultPath choice
Academy IFri 9 OctMax 80 OVR, max 86 Pace, max 7 PlayStyles, ST or CAM, born on or after 9 Oct 2003 (FUTWIZ, EA)81 OVR (FUTWIZ)Level 5: pace, shooting or dribbling (FUTWIZ)
Academy IISun 11 Oct (community)81 OVR and a completed Academy I, shown as "Future Stars Evo Complete" (FUTWIZ)82 OVR (FUTWIZ)Level 3: passing, physical or a mix of both (FUTWIZ), which matches its "playmaker, physical powerhouse or all-rounder" description
Academy IIITue 13 Oct (community)82 OVR and a completed Academy II, shown as "Future Stars Evo Complete" (FUTWIZ)83 OVR (FUTWIZ)Level 1: pace, shooting or dribbling, each with a PlayStyle (FUTWIZ); Rapid, Power Shot or Technical (community)
Academy IVFri 16 Oct (community)83 OVR (community)85 OVR (community)Shooting (adds Low Driven Shot) or passing and a stat round-out (community)

Academy I and II work the same way. You play a match per level with the Evo player in your active squad (Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or above, or Rush, Rivals, Champions or Live Events), and the final level is a Pathway where you win and pick your path (FUTWIZ). Academy I has five levels and Academy II has three. Academy III is different: it's a single Pathway level, and you need to win 2 matches in Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or above, or in Rush, Rivals, Champions or Live Events (FUTWIZ).

The three Academy III paths (FUTWIZ)

Every path gives Overall +1 (83) and a PlayStyle. The caps are in brackets:

PathUpgrades (cap)PlayStyle (community reporting)
Option 1, paceOverall +1 (83), Acceleration +3 (87), Sprint Speed +3 (87)Rapid
Option 2, shootingOverall +1 (83), Finishing +4 (88), Shot Power +3 (88), Long Shots +3 (84), Volleys +5 (82), Composure +3 (85)Power Shot
Option 3, dribblingOverall +1 (83), Agility +4 (89), Balance +2 (85), Reactions +3 (86), Ball Control +5 (89), Dribbling +5 (89)Technical

The pace path has the fewest stat boosts, so most of its value is the PlayStyle. The shooting and dribbling paths add more across the board.

Rapid, Power Shot or Technical? How to choose

Pick Rapid (pace path) if…

Your Academy player is a striker who runs in behind. EA describes Rapid as a PlayStyle for "a Player who is known to use speed and knock the ball ahead of their opponent to beat them whilst dribbling". It sits naturally on top of the pace option at Academy I Level 5, which raised the Acceleration and Sprint Speed caps to 84. Academy III's pace path lifts those caps again, to 87 (FUTWIZ).

Pick Power Shot (shooting path) if…

You've built a pure finisher. If you took the shooting option at Academy I, Power Shot keeps that theme going, and this path raises the Finishing and Shot Power caps to 88 (FUTWIZ). Community reporting says one of Academy IV's two paths is also a shooting path (adding Low Driven Shot), so this is the route for a player you want scoring from everywhere.

Pick Technical (dribbling path) if…

Your player is a CAM or a forward who carries the ball. EA describes Technical as a PlayStyle for "a Player who regularly tries to beat an opponent by using technical dribbling ability (with little to no use of skill moves or little to no physical contact)". It pairs with the dribbling option at Academy I, which was also the only one that added skill moves, and this path has the highest caps of the three: 89 for Agility, Ball Control and Dribbling (FUTWIZ).

Check these before you commit

  • The PlayStyles your card already has. If your player already owns the PlayStyle a path adds, that part of the path may be wasted. Look the base card up on FUTWIZ Players before you choose. [CONFIRM IN GAME: what happens if the card already has the path's PlayStyle.]
  • The PlayStyle cap. FUTWIZ shows each path's PlayStyle with a cap of 3, so a card that already has three may not gain anything new. FUTWIZ doesn't name the PlayStyles, so check the path screens before you pick. [CONFIRM IN GAME: the PlayStyle each path adds (Rapid, Power Shot or Technical) and whether it's the standard version or PlayStyle+.]
  • You don't have to stick to one theme. FUTWIZ's Academy III requirements don't depend on your earlier paths, and community reporting agrees you can mix paths between stages, so a pace build at Academy I can still take Technical here. Pick the PlayStyle your player is missing, not the one that "matches".
  • Preview first. EA's FUT Deep Dive says Pathways give Evolutions branching upgrade choices. Preview all three options on the Evolution screen, because you only get one. Our Intro Evolutions guide explains how Pathways work.

Rules that catch people out

Community reporting unless marked:

  • One Academy player, start to finish. The Academy isn't repeatable, so it's one Academy player per club. [CONFIRM IN GAME: whether the Academy stages are repeatable or limited to one player per club.]
  • Keep your player on the Academy path. If you put them through other Evos between stages, they can go over the next stage's entry rating and get locked out.
  • You can't finish early. Each stage only opens on its release day, so Academy IV has to wait until 16 October.
  • Treat path choices as permanent. "Remove last Evolution" strips the most recent step, and that removal is final, so it isn't an undo button. [CONFIRM IN GAME: whether "Remove last Evolution" works on Academy stages and what it undoes.]
  • No SBCs mid-Evo. While your player is in an Evolution, EA Help says you can't use them in SBCs.
  • Two clocks. Each Evolution has a start-by timer and an expiry timer (EA Help). On 14 October, Academy I, II and III all showed about two weeks to start and three weeks to finish (FUTWIZ).

The Future Stars Academy objective

Community reporting also mentions a separate Future Stars Academy objective group that rewards you for using your Academy player, with tasks such as scoring, playing and winning a set number of matches. We're not listing rewards until we've seen them in game. Check the Objectives menu in game or FUTWIZ Objectives. [CONFIRM IN GAME: Future Stars Academy objective tasks and rewards.]

What Academy IV needs

[REFRESH ON FRI 16 OCT: Academy IV]

Community reporting says Academy IV arrives on Friday 16 October. It needs your player at 83 OVR, adds +2 to 85 OVR with shooting and physical boosts, and offers two paths: a shooting path that adds Low Driven Shot (with the PlayStyle cap rising to four) or a passing and stat round-out path. [CONFIRM: Academy IV date (Fri 16 Oct), +2 to 85 OVR and its two paths.]

We'll update this page on Friday. Until then, the best thing you can do is finish Academy III and keep your player out of other Evos.

Your Academy player at 82 OVR, with Academy II completed (shown as "Future Stars Evo Complete") and no more than 7 PlayStyles (FUTWIZ). Then win 2 matches with them in your active squad.
