In 2005, Michael Essien joined Chelsea for a £24.4m record fee. The Ghanaian quickly cemented his place in the Blues’ midfield alongside Claude Makélélé and Frank Lampard. He was noted for his energetic and powerful playing style, for which he was nicknamed ‘The Bison’. Following a season where he contributed several vital goals, Essien was voted Chelsea’s Player of the Year for 2006-07. His nine-season spell at Stamford Bridge saw Essien win two Premier League titles, six domestic cups and the UEFA Champions League.
