In August 2012, Michael Essien joined Spanish giants Real Madrid on a one-year loan deal. In Spain he reunited with manager José Mourinho and played in a total of 35 matches. Upon his contract expiry with the Blues, the legendary Chelsea midfielder joined Italian side AC Milan in 2014. Although being hindered by recurring injuries, Essien’s tenacious displays and desire to always give his all for club and country earned him a great reputation and a remarkably decorated career.
