FC 27 Bone Builder Evolution: Requirements, Upgrades and Best CBs to Use

What is the FC 27 Bone Builder Evolution, who can enter, and how do you finish it?

Bone Builder is a free Evolution for centre-backs rated 81 or lower with 84 Pace or less, 7 PlayStyles or fewer and no PlayStyles+. Across three levels and four matches, one of which must be a win, it lifts your defender to a cap of 82 OVR, adds +1★ Weak Foot up to 3★, a PlayStyle up to a cap of 3, and raises Short Passing and Long Passing to a cap of 85 and Composure to a cap of 84.

The in-game description sums it up: "Build from the bones up. Raise your CB from the crypt as a ball-playing defender with haunting passing range, eerie composure and a backbone no attacker can break."

The in-game Evolutions tab shows the exact start-by and expiry times for your account, so treat that countdown as the final word.

Who can go in

Any card that meets all five requirements on the FUTWIZ Bone Builder page:

• Position: CB
• Overall: 81 or lower
• Pace: 84 or lower
• PlayStyles: 7 or fewer
• PlayStyles+: none

The eligible list on the Bone Builder page also includes cards whose main position is elsewhere but who list CB as an alternative, such as Toletti, Huerta, Stanisic and Koopmeiners, so alternative position CBs can go in. If you plan to use one of those, open the Evolution in game and make sure the card appears in the selection screen before you commit.

Every level's upgrades

Each upgrade raises a stat to a cap. A card that already sits close to a cap gains less, and a stat already above it stays where it is. The Overall boost of up to seven points only applies in full to a card starting at 75.

Every task counts in Squad Battles on Semi-Pro or above, or in Rush, Rivals, Champions and Live Events, as long as the Evo player is in your active line-up. Our data doesn't name the Level 2 PlayStyle, so check it on the Evolution's Level 2 screen in game. Bone Builder raises no Pace, so the card you put in keeps its own speed.

Who to put in

The best picks are centre-backs at 81 or below with Pace of 84 or less and no PlayStyles+ whose passing and ball control are weak, because those stats get the largest boosts. A tough, slow stopper with low passing gains the most from the Short Passing, Long Passing, Ball Control and Composure boosts.

For the full Overall gain, a card rated 75 lands exactly on 82. Every card from 75 to 81 finishes at 82, so a higher-rated card gains fewer Overall points but may already have better base stats elsewhere. Pace never moves, so if you want a quick ball-playing CB, start with the fastest eligible card you own.

Why it matters

Most centre-back Evolutions add defending and physical stats. Bone Builder does the opposite and turns a stopper into a defender who can play out from the back. It suits a back three or any build-up style where your CBs start attacks, and it costs nothing but four matches.

How Bone Builder fits the Halloween run

Bone Builder arrived in the same week as FC 27 Ultimate Scream, Ultimate Scream Team 2 and the free Halloween Evolutions Witching Hour and Rise From the Grave. EA has not said whether it counts as an Ultimate Scream Evolution, so check your in-game Evolutions tab before relying on it for any Ultimate Scream objectives.

Evolution rules that catch people out

• No SBCs mid-Evolution: a card in an Evolution that is still in progress can't be used in Squad Building Challenges.
• Two clocks: you must start Bone Builder before the start-by time (around 7 November, going by the FUTWIZ hub timer), then finish every level before it expires.
• The last level needs a win: Level 3 only counts a win, not just a match played.
• Active line-up only: the Evo player has to be in your starting line-up for matches to count.
