Garrincha joined Botafogo in 1953 and quickly made a name for himself, scoring a hat-trick on his debut against Bonsucesso. In his early years with Botafogo, Garrincha became a fans’ favourite due to his flair and incredible dribbling ability. Despite numerous attempts from major European clubs to sign him, Garrincha remained with Botafogo and helped them lift the Campeonato Carioca in 1957 – scoring 20 goals in 26 appearances along the way and being named the league’s best player.
