FUT CHAMPIONS CUP INTERVIEW : DETO
In this interview, we caught up with the German, Kai “Deto” Wollin. He has lived many FIFA player’s dreams – casual and professional alike – being a world champion on three occasions. Let’s find out a little bit more about the world beater.
As we just mentioned you’ve won not one but three world championships. Two of those being World Cyber Games events, which championship means the most to you and why?
deto: All of them meant so much to me. Winning a World Championship for the first time is unforgettable. On the other hand, I think that nobody else has defended a World Championship title ever before, so this was also unbelievable. My most recent was also unique in the way that it came from the PC version of FIFA and it took a while to get used to the different scene. Also, it was a long time ago since I won my last title. I really enjoyed all of them in their own individual way.
Being a three-time German Champion is no small feat – did you always believe you would be on top eventually?
deto: I was always curious about finding out where the limit is. My motivation was always to be competing with the best of the best and this still drives me.
How did it feel to come so far at FIFA Interactive World Cup becoming the PlayStation champion but to fall in the overall final?
deto: I think that I had a disadvantage because of the controller thing, but Overall Gorilla is a deserved Champion. I really hope that I get a revenge Someday and then I will do everything I can to get the outcome I’d prefer.
Many casual players and competitive players alike have really struggled to cope with various different updates. Do you share their frustrations?
deto: In my opinion the most of the updates are fine. FIFA needs to be a realistic Football Simulation and that wasn’t the case previously. I wouldn’t say it is perfect, but the direction is right.
If you were to offer a bit of advice to a player who doesn’t have the resources to splash the cash, are there any players you would recommend buying that wouldn’t break the bank?
deto: yeah, there are always players who are not that expensive and can be really strong, overpowered is the word. This season some of them are Martial, Jesus, and Bakayoko.
Preparation and mindset are key on the build-up to an event and every player has their own way of staying in the zone pre-tournament What do you do in the time leading up to a game?
deto: I don’t have anything in particular. Just be calm, get some fresh air and drink enough to be mentally prepared as possible.
From the conservative Jose to the daring Pep, all managers and players have their own way of playing the beautiful game.If you were to describe the style of football you play, what would it be?
deto: Haha, I am more of a guy who likes the idea of having full control of the game and playing beautiful Football. I like to have possession in the way of having the ball in dangerous areas and strike out of nowhere. Sadly, FIFA is just too much about counter attacks and playing straight nowadays. I would love to have a conversation with Pep and hear his ideas about the beautiful game.
The Bundesliga is home to some of the most talented and exciting talents in world football. Who is your favourite player to watch in the Bundesliga and why?
deto: Marco Reus is one of my favourite players. He is brilliant on and off the Ball. He can make the difference in every situation.
Your bar of expectations must be high for the coming year. The stakes are as a high as ever and the esports audience is growing exponentially. What is your ultimate goal in FIFA 18?
deto: I have two specific goals this year. One of them is to get the best results possible. I try to avoid Building pressure for myself to name a specific rank. I just play my a game and see what I get for it. Nothing more I can do anyways. The other one is finding a Club or an Organisation which I can really identify with, it adds extra motivation. For me, the next step in the last one in my career and also a very important step for a career afterwards.
Since the launch of FIFA 18, you’ve been streaming regularly via Twitch.tv – why did you decide to start streaming frequently?
deto: I stream for many reasons. First, is that I was not really active through my social media channels. I was always the guy who wanted to be as successful as possible and try to avoid anything that could distract me. Being popular is nice, but I just have other priorities. Now, I have the feeling that I want to give something back for all the huge support I received even without being the most active. I am really thankful for it. It’s pleasure when I here message like “I had a great evening because of your stream”, or “I got a better Rank in the Weekend League because of your tips in the live stream, thank you so much,” I didn’t expect it to be so enjoyable.
What are your thoughts on the current FUT Champions set-up and what changes would you make if any?
deto: Overall it was great last time. However, the two things I’d change are, allowing players to prepare at the Consoles that they play on because I experienced in Paris for example that the game was completely different in the Backstage Area. Secondly, the players have to wake up at 6 in the morning. That is not an appropriate time for a FIFA Player. I do understand that there is a schedule, but the time the Tournament takes is always the same regardless of the time it starts. I think even spectator would appreciate a later starting time.
Do you have any final words or shoutouts?
deto: Thanks for your time, see you in Barcelona!
