FC 27 Gameplay Update: Every Change Coming in Title Update 1.2 (Fullbacks, Offsides, Kick-Off Goals)
EA's October FC 27 Gameplay Developer Notes explained: the five v1.2.0 gameplay changes, what EA is still investigating and the Discord Q&A time.
Correct as of 29 Oct 2026, 10:00 GMT (Europe/London)
EA has published its October Gameplay Developer Notes for FC 27. The first gameplay balance changes of the year arrive in Title Update v1.2.0 in mid-November. Here is what is changing, what EA is only looking at for now, and what it should mean for your matches.
Quick answer: what is changing in FC 27 gameplay?
When: EA says the first FC 27 gameplay balance changes come in Title Update v1.2.0 in mid-November. EA has not given an exact date yet, so we will update this page when it does.
What is changing (EA's five areas):
- Fullback positioning: fullbacks hold the defensive line more consistently instead of dropping too deep and playing attackers onside.
- Offside awareness: attackers read the defensive line better and time their runs to stay onside.
- Attacking AI: AI teammates make more purposeful support runs into space around the box.
- Kick-off goal reduction: the defensive line holds a higher position after kick-off.
- Loose ball switching: auto switching picks the player closest to the ball more reliably after a slide tackle, a headed pass or a missed shot.
What EA is still investigating (no change promised yet): high defensive lines putting too much pressure on the opposition, collisions between players of different sizes and physical attributes, and the accuracy of specific shot types alongside goalkeeper positioning.
Q&A: EA's gameplay team is hosting a live Discord Q&A on Friday 30 October at 4:30pm GMT.

Why there has been no gameplay patch until now
EA chose not to touch gameplay in the first month so players had time to adapt to the new mechanics, which it calls a new approach compared with previous years. Title Update v1.1 on 27 October was bug fixes and quality of life only, with no balance or tuning changes. Our Title Update v1.1 guide has the full list.
What EA's match data shows after one month
EA says four trends stand out. It gives no figures, so neither do we:
- More accurate shooting: players take fewer shots overall but score more of the chances they create.
- More efficient passing: pass completion is higher, even with slightly fewer passes and manually controlled defenders intercepting slightly more often.
- More successful defending: successful tackles are up as players get used to the extra emphasis on manual defending.
- More tactical variety: players are trying more set ups than in FC 26, and EA says win rates by formation are "evenly distributed with minimal variance". Some formations are more popular in the higher divisions, and EA says it is watching that closely.
The five changes coming in Title Update v1.2.0
EA describes these changes as "subtle and targeted". It also says odd moments "will still happen occasionally", so expect fewer frustrating moments rather than none.
1. Fullback positioning
EA has seen fullbacks drop too deep while defending, which breaks the defensive shape and keeps attackers onside. After v1.2.0, fullbacks should hold the line more consistently and only track runs when there is a genuine threat.
What it means in your matches: fewer goals where one deep fullback plays a runner onside, and less need to drag your fullback back into line by hand.
2. Offside awareness
Alongside the fullback change, EA has tuned attackers to recognise the defensive line better and make runs that stay onside.
What it means in your matches: your strikers should be flagged offside a little less often on through balls, and the same goes for your opponent's.
3. Attacking AI improvements
EA says AI attackers do not always make decisive runs into space, especially around the penalty area. v1.2.0 aims for more purposeful support runs and better use of space around the box.
What it means in your matches: more passing options when you reach the final third, so build up play should feel less static.
4. Kick-off goal reduction
EA found the defensive line could drop too deep after kick-off, making it hard to stop attacks heading straight for goal. After v1.2.0 the line holds higher after kick-off, so opponents should meet pressure before they reach the box.
What it means in your matches: the quick goal straight from kick-off should happen less often, though you still need to defend it.
5. Loose ball switching improvements
Auto switching does not always select the player nearest the ball. EA has made targeted fixes for three moments: after a teammate's slide tackle, after a headed pass and after a shot misses the target.
What it means in your matches: you should take control of the right player more often when the ball breaks loose, which matters most if you defend manually.
What EA is still investigating
These areas are not changing in v1.2.0. EA says they need careful testing because a change to one system can affect others:
- Situations where high defensive lines put too much pressure on the opposition.
- How collisions between players of different sizes and physical attributes are handled.
- The accuracy of specific shot types alongside goalkeeper positioning.
Treat these as areas to watch, not confirmed nerfs or buffs.
Why balance is hard, in EA's words
EA points out that people play differently depending on their Rivals Division and mode, so something common in Division 7 may be rare in Division 3, and one change will not suit everyone. Feedback also pulls both ways: some players find through passes more rewarding this year while others prefer older FC passing, and some want more manual control in defence while others want more help from AI teammates. EA says each change is playtested and reviewed with its Design Council before release.
What to do now
- Watch the Q&A: EA's live Discord Q&A with the gameplay team is on Friday 30 October at 4:30pm GMT on the official EA SPORTS FC Discord server.
- Send feedback through official channels: EA says it reads Discord, its Feedback Portal, the EA Forums and social media.
- Do not rebuild your squad yet: nothing changes until v1.2.0 is live. Keep using the FUTWIZ Squad Builder and FC 27 Players database to plan, check real-world form on Football Today live scores, and recheck your fullbacks once the patch lands.
What happens next
We will update this guide after the 30 October Q&A and again when EA publishes the full Title Update v1.2.0 patch notes, including the release date and any Ultimate Team, Career Mode or Grounds fixes. EA's October notes cover gameplay only.
