Jockeying is one of the most important aspects of defending in FC24, it is vital that you know when to use jockey and what type of jockey to use.

FUTWIZ pro Mark11 is going to take you through all you need to know about jockeying and when to perform it in game.

What star skill moves does a player need to perform the jockey?
There is no skill requirement to be able to jockey, the jockey defending skill can be performed by any outfield player.

How to Perform the Jockey
These instructions are for a player who is facing towards the opposition goal when shooting from left to right

There are two different types of jockey, there is the Standard Jockey and the Sprint Jockey, the difference between the two types of jockey is simply the speed in which you player is able to move whilst jockeying.

The Sprint Jockey allows your player to move quicker than the Standard Jockey, however by moving quicker it means it is harder to make smaller adjustments to the jockey and easier to overcommit and leave space for the attacker to move in to.

In order to perform the Standard Jockey all you need to do is be controlling your player with the left stick whilst holding L2/LT, below shows the button combination for this:

Xbox Jockey Controls

In order to perform the Spring Jockey, again it requires you to be controlling your player with the left stick, however this time you have to hold L2/L2 and R2/RT, below shows the button combination for this:

Xbox Jockey Sprinting Controls

When performing either versions of the jockey, if you manage to jockey into the ball the defender should automatically take it without you needing the press the tackle button.

When should you use the jockey? Throughout a game you need to using the Standard Jockey and the Sprint Jockey at all times, and the best time to use this will depend on the situation.

The Standard Jockey should be used when you have an attacker directly in front of you and they are trying to go round you, this allows you to make the small adjustments you need to either predict the way they will go or simply react to their body movements.

Here is an a example of when to use the Standard Jockey, in this example you can see that the attacker is dribbling around the box looking to find a space, and you can see the manually controlled centre back is performing a standard jockey, simply waiting for the attacker to make a move before stepping into the attacker to take the ball from them.

The Sprint Jockey should be used when the defender is side by side an attacker and you are trying to keep up with the player if they’re either jogging or sprinting. This allows the defender to maintain pace but also have the defensive stability of the jockey.

Here is an a example of when to use the Sprint Jockey, in this example you can see that the player is playing a through ball to the attacker, and the CB is manually controlled, at this point a Sprint Jockey allows the CB to keep up with the attacker whilst maintaining the Sprint Jockey, and there is not a need to make and rash tackles.
