What is AcceleRATE?

AcceleRATE is a brand new feature added to FIFA 23, this has been defined as an expansion to the player movement system, dividing players into unique archetypes.

This has enabled EA to showcase personality in player’s acceleration with the goal of improving the viability of different player types in FIFA 23.

This feature is inspired by real-life differences between footballers, where even players with similar speeds can move very differently across the pitch.

Most players will fit into the default acceleration type called Controlled, however, there are two new types called Explosive and Lengthy.

What are the different AcceleRATE types and what effect does it have in game?

There are three acceleration types, Controlled, Explosive and Lengthy. Controlled is considered to be the default acceleration type.

Here is how these acceleration types have been defined by EA:

  • Controlled

    • Most players in FIFA 23 will fall into the Controlled acceleration type as they accelerate uniformly in a controlled manner.

  • Explosive

    • These are shorter and more agile players who are able to quickly cover short distances and get ahead of their opponents, even if that means slowing down after the initial burst of acceleration.

    • These players are quicker to start but their acceleration rate slows down.

  • Lengthy

    • Taller and stronger, these players need a bit more time to get going, but are able to catch up to anyone and even surpass them, provided they have enough distance.

    • These players start slower but will thrive over longer distances.

    • In short, Explosive players can likely do better at short distances and one on one situations as opposed to Lengthy players who will do better over long distances such as in breakaways after a through ball for example.

What defines a player's AcceleRATE?

A player's AcceleRATE is automatically allocated through a calculation of a player's Height, Strength and Agility attributes.

EA have stated that Acceleration and Sprint Speed are still the main factors in determining how fast a player is overall which is true, however recent gameplay testing has seen a players AcceleRATE type is having a huge impact on how the players feel and act in game.

In order for a player to be allocated an Explosive or Lengthy AcceleRATE, they must fulfil the following:

  • Explosive:

    • Agility >= 65

    • (Agility - Strength) >= 15

    • Acceleration >= 74

    • Height <= 180 cm (~ 5’11”)

    • Example player: Vinícius Jr.

  • Lengthy

    • Strength >= 65

    • (Strength - Agility) >= 14

    • Acceleration >= 55

    • Height >= 174 cm (~ 5’9”)

    • Example player: Virgil Van Dijk

All players who do not meet either of these requirements are allocated the Controlled AcceleRATE, this can be considered as the default acceleration types, an example player: Son Heung-min

What does this all mean?

A very short summary of what this all means and how it affects the players in game is that every player is allocated an AcceleRATE which is an acceleration type, this acceleration type defines how quick a player will accelerate in game but not only that, how long it will take for a player to reach their max speed and how they react once at their max speed.

The players with the Explosive AcceleRATE are quick off the mark, but over a longer distance will start to slow.

The players with the Lengthy AcceleRATE are slower off the mark, but over a longer distance will gather pace and be much more effective over a longer distance.

And those with the Controlled AcceleRATE will be pretty much what you are used to from previous games, having their Acceleration and Sprint Speed being the key determining factor for their speed.

Also, players attributes can be adjust due to upgrades, chemistry styles etc however a players Height cannot be changed so, Explosive players will always be <= 180 cm (~ 5’11”) and Lengthy players will always be >= 174 cm (~ 5’9”)

Can I see players AcceleRATE in game?

You are able to see a player’s AcceleRATE type in game, however you need to be in a match and viewing the player from the Team Management section.

The example below shows where you can see this information.

Unfortunately you are unable to see this information within the FIFA Ultimate Team menus, it has to be done in game.

Where can I see a list of all players AcceleRATE?

If you want to see a player's AcceleRATE, FUTWIZ.com has this information on all players and as you can see in the example below it is shown on all player profiles.

FUTWIZ.com also has the ability to search and filter by players AcceleRATE type as shown below

Do chemistry styles affect AcceleRATE?

Yes they do, and this is where this all becomes very interesting and the reason I say this is that by applying a chemistry style to a player we have the ability to change their AcceleRATE, therefore giving us more freedom in who we choose and how we adjust to the ever changing ‘meta’ of the game.

For the next part we will use Lewandowski as an example, by default Lewandowski has a Controlled AcceleRATE as shown below

The reason for this is that he does not meet the criteria of either an Explosive or Lengthy player, the 3 key factors being:

  • Explosive:

    • Agility >= 65

    • (Agility - Strength) >= 15

    • Acceleration >= 74

    • Height <= 180 cm (~ 5’11”)

  • Lengthy

    • Strength >= 65

    • (Strength - Agility) >= 14

    • Acceleration >= 55

    • Height >= 174 cm (~ 5’9”)

Whereas without a chemistry style applied and no chemistry points acquired this is Lewandowski’s attributes:

  • Strength = 87

  • (Strength - Agility) = 10

  • Acceleration = 76

  • Height = 185 cm (~ 6’3”)

Which if you compare to the requirements for an Explosive or Lengthy AcceleRATE he doesn’t meet the right requirements for either, looking at this it simply would not be possible for him to have an Explosive AcceleRATE as he is 185 cm and the requirement is 180 cm or less and of course we cannot change a player height.

So if we look Lengthy as you can see he meets 3 of the 4 requirements, his Strength is 87, his Acceleration is 76 and his height is 185 all above the required requirements, meaning if he was able to meet the Strength – Agility requirement he would change to a Lengthy AcceleRATE.

The way in which this can be obtained is using chemistry styles, so we are looking to increase his Strength but not Agility so that we can achieve that Strength – Agility >= 14

For this example we will use a Marksman chemistry style and show the effect with 1 chemistry point and 2 chemistry points as there is a difference in the attribute boost the player receives.

With 1 Chemistry Point:

As you can see Lewandowski’s AcceleRATE does not change, this is because he didn’t not get enough of a Strength boost to meet the requirement of Strength – Agility >= 14.

Right now 89-77=12, we need it to be >= 14

With 2 Chemistry Points:

As you can see Lewandowski’s AcceleRATE has now changed to Lengthy, this is because he has now met the final required parameter of Lengthy, Strength – Agility >= 14.

His Strength – Agility is now 14 (91-77) which is why his AcceleRATE has now changed.

It is important to understand that just because a chemistry style changes the AcceleRATE of a player when on 3 chemistry points, it doesn’t mean it will for all variations as it is all about the numbers and requirements.

In this example I showed you:

  • The requirements of each AcceleRATE

  • Lewandowski’s current AcceleRATE without a chemistry style applied

  • The effect of a chemistry style with 1 point

  • The effect of a chemistry style with 2 points

I understand this might seem quite confusing but have no fear, you do not need to do all of these calculations yourself there is a very easy way to do all of this...

What is the easiest way to calculate the effects of chemistry styles on a player's AcceleRATE?

No need to panic, the easiest way to see the effects of chemistry styles is to simply go to FUTWIZ.com, select the player you want to look at and just try out the chemistry styles there with varying player chemistry (0-3).

As long as you have a rough idea about the requirements of Explosive and Lengthy you should be able to click through some of the chemistry styles and see what fits best.

Which chemistry styles can affect a player's AcceleRATE?

Explosive - If you wish to make a player Explosive, typically you will be looking to increase a players Agility and not their Strength, these are the chemistry styles that increase a players Agility and not Strength

  • Finisher

    • 1 Chem = +2 AGI, 2 Chem = +4 AGI, 2 Chem = +8 AGI

  • Artist

    • 1 Chem = +3 AGI, 2 Chem = +8 AGI, 2 Chem = +15 AGI

  • Engine

    • 1 Chem = +1 AGI, 2 Chem = +2 AGI, 2 Chem = +4 AGI

As you can see the Artist chemistry style gives the most Agility, therefore it is likely this will be the most commonly used chemistry style to make a player Explosive.

Explosive - If you wish to make a player Lengthy, typically you will be looking to increase a players Strength and not their Agility, these are the chemistry styles that increase a players Strength and not Agility

  • Sniper

    • 1 Chem = +1 STR, 2 Chem = +2 STR, 2 Chem = +4 STR

  • Marksman

    • 1 Chem = +2 STR, 2 Chem = +4 STR, 2 Chem = +8 STR

  • Hawk

    • 1 Chem = +1 STR, 2 Chem = +2 STR, 2 Chem = +4 STR

  • Architect

    • 1 Chem = +3 STR, 2 Chem = +8 STR, 2 Chem = +15 STR

  • Sentinel

    • 1 Chem = +1 STR, 2 Chem = +2 STR, 2 Chem = +4 STR

  • Backbone

    • 1 Chem = +1 STR, 2 Chem = +2 STR, 2 Chem = +4 STR

  • Anchor

    • 1 Chem = +2 STR, 2 Chem = +4 STR, 2 Chem = +8 STR

As you can see the Architect chemistry style gives the most Strength, therefore it is likely this will be the most commonly used chemistry style to make a player Lengthy.

What is the ‘meta’ AcceleRATE?

This is a question that no doubt everyone wants to know, but be very wary about blindly following the ‘meta’, you should find players and AcceleRATE types that fit your play style.

What I will say is that right now there is definitely a preference for the Lengthy AcceleRATE type as it seems very effective in game for both attacking and defending, however this will very likely change over time.

Is AcceleRATE “on old” gen?

No, AcceleRATE is only available on Next Gen versions of FIFA23, this was confirmed by EA in their Pitch Notes

What happens when New Gen plays Old Gen then?

This is not possible, you can only play New Gen vs New Gen and Old Gen vs Old Gen
